Urban Research Project
34 Kilburn High Rd, London NW6 5UA, UK
September-December 2022

This research project delves into the impact of Kilburn High Road's development on the surrounding area, using the iconic Red Lion public house as a focal point. With a rich history in Kilburn, the stories within the Red Lion not only illustrate the local development but also mirror broader historical trends. Through an engaging animation as the expressional methodology, the project visualizes research findings using diverse materials such as hand-drawings, paste-up, model-making, and data tables to narrate the story to the audience.

Public houses, commonly referred to as "pubs," constitute an integral facet of urban communities. The Red Lion, a venerable establishment, serves as a compelling exemplar illustrating the intricate interplay between pubs and urban landscapes, as well as their pivotal role in social evolution. Situated along Kilburn High Road, the Red Lion traces its lineage back to the 15th century, contemporaneous with the thoroughfare's inception, originally serving as an adjunct to the Kilburn Priory. Subsequent epochs witnessed transformative societal shifts, notably the advent of railways along Kilburn High Road, engendering fluctuations in the fortunes of the Red Lion vis-à-vis its surrounding milieu. With all the materails from research, the following mapping and animation makes a narrative expression.

The animated sequence adeptly navigates from a panoramic vista of Kilburn to a nuanced examination of the Red Lion, encapsulating the dynamic symbiosis between the bustling thoroughfare and the venerable establishment. This juxtaposition of the pub's heyday, teeming with vitality courtesy of the High Road's bustling commerce, with its subsequent downturn attributed to the evolution of the thoroughfare and the altering socio-economic landscape, constitutes a poignant narrative thread. Rendered in chronological sequence, the animation serves as a commemorative ode to the Red Lion.
