City of Celebration
Team work
Spacial narrative Project
Beijing, China
June-October 2020
This project aims to explore the survival strategy of Yangliuqing, a market town in Tianjin. Our research revealed that the town’s most distinctive feature is its thriving festival industry, which serves as its economic backbone. Building on this insight, we have centered our design approach around these festival activities, envisioning Yangliuqing as a "city of celebration" to promote sustainable development. By leveraging its cultural heritage, we propose a future strategy that integrates festivals as a key driver of the town’s growth and revitalization.
Centered around the concept of the city, a dynamic system of moving stages has been designed, each dispersing specific activities as they shuttle organically through the urban landscape. These stages serve as mobile platforms for festivals and ceremonies, seamlessly integrating with the city’s rhythm. By creating different festival routes, residents can engage in diverse ways of participation, allowing for both flexibility and inclusivity. The STAGE system connects the city in an organic way, enhancing its internal cohesion and outward identity, while reinforcing its cultural energy and vitality. My aim is to preserve the city's unique cultural heritage by enabling festivals and ceremonies to flourish without disrupting the daily lives of its inhabitants.
